Mr. Robert Penn Warren

Dear Mr. Warren:
I'm sorry that I've taken so long to let
you know the details of the SNCC benefit but
we ran into some complications. Mr. Updike,
who was to appear with you, has withdrawn
from the program because of SNCC's statement
on Vietnam, after debating his move for about
two weeks. We are now working through our New
York office to get another writer to share the
program with you and I am fully confident that
we will within a day or two.
The reading is set for march 4 at the
Arlington Street Church in downtown Boston
which seats about 900. We are counting on a program
lasting about 1 1/2 to 2 hours divided between
you and hte as yet unknown writer. We will get
someone from the Harvard English faculty to do
the introductions. The program will begin at
8:00. After the reading, if you agree, we
would like to arrange a reception in a home
nearby for those who become "sponsors" of
the reading. This would help us to get more
sponsors and therefore more money. Will you
let us know if this is satisfactory. Also,
let us know if we can provide transportation
from train, bus, or airport, and overnight
accommodations. I'll let you know who the other
person on the program is as soon as I find out.
Thank you for your cooperation and your patience.
Sincerely,
[Signed]
Janice Campbell
